In April 2022, we published the following articles:

  • A statement issued by the FINAT (International Federation of Manufacturers and Converters of Adhesives and Iron-Ons on Paper and Other Supports) in February states that the supply of paper and cardboard is under severe pressure, with prices 50% higher than usual.
  • Report on US Inventories, March 1, 2022.
  • The European Commission is moving towards introducing front-of-pack nutrition information and will select and propose a scheme as a unique mandatory system throughout EU.
  • Hungary, which now processes an average annual quantity of just over 100,000 metric tonnes, is now getting close to self-sufficiency.
  • In Italy, the ENEA Biotechnology Laboratory developed an innovative and low-cost process to synthesize bioactive molecules with impressive health properties, in particular crocins and carotenoids, some of which can now be synthesized from tomato.
  • Alistair Blake was elected as President of AMITOM during its Annual General Meeting held in Rome early April.
  • Global Imports of Tomato Products, updated 8 April 2022.
  • In Nigeria, an initiative of Olam-Caraway helped improve tomato farm yields, which were recorded at 40 metric tonnes per hectare.
  • AMITOM revised its 2022 forecast, which now stands at 16.8 million tonnes, a reduction of 11% compared to 2021. It might reduce even further as it currently includes 500,000 tonnes to be processed in Ukraine.
  • In Northern Italy, a framework agreement was reached with an unprecedented increase in price. Negotiations are still underway in the Central South Basin.
  • 95% of Portuguese territory is already suffering from severe or extreme drought. Morocco and Spain are also particularly affected this winter's rainfall deficit.
  • The cost price of tomato plantation in China has risen since the pandemic, causing the Chinese tomato paste to lose its price advantage in the international market.
  • The next WPTC congress will be held in Budapest, in June 2024.
