Negotiations with growers in Portugal have been particularly difficult this year with growers looking for an increase of 10 Euro a ton (mT) and processors offering 3 Euro and struggling to contract their required volumes.

The grading system in Portugal has evolved significantly over the years and in addition to the more common discounts for foreign matter, greens, limited use and a brix scale, most processors offer premiums for higher color and discounts for lower color of the ripe red fruit. Negotiations are also conducted on the price delivered to the factory gate, with some variation depending upon the location of the processor. Transport costs can typically vary from 5 Euro to 8 Euro / mT depending on the location of the processor.

After a significant number of years with no change in the prices of tomatoes, prices this year were finally agreed at 83-85 Euro/mT (or a field gate price of 77 to 78 Euro/mT) for a brix of 4.9 to 5.2 and an average red color delivered to the processor, with processors unable to contract their target volumes. This represents an increase of 6 Euro over the price paid in 2020. Portuguese level of price is very nearly identical to the price in Extremadura Spain (See related articles below).
