Extremadura: average price for the season between EUR 76 and 80

The agricultural upstream sector was hoping for an increase to EUR 90

On 19 February, the date limit was reached for official negotiations regarding the price for processing tomatoes to be set by agreement between tomato processors and growers’ organizations or cooperatives for the 2021 season in Spain. A price of EUR 78 per metric tonne field gate was reached, far from the EU at 90 per tonne requested by the agricultural production sector. This is the average value for 2021 in Extremadura, between the minimum of EUR 76 and the maximum of EUR 80 negotiated between the different POs and processors.
This value confirms a notable increase of EUR 8 per tonne – close on 11.5% – compared to the average reference price for the previous crop (EUR 70/mT field gate in 2020).
For the time being, the results of negotiations in the Ebro Valley (generally higher than in Extremadura) and in Andalusia have not been published, but it seems to be a given that the average price for raw materials this year in Spain will be higher than it was last year.

 
The level of remuneration offered for 2021 in Extremadura nonetheless remains insufficient in the eyes of the Farmers’ and Breeders’ Association of Villanueva de la Serena, for whom the price “was already not profitable for growers last year, and will still not be profitable this year.” The Farmers’ Association of Villanovense has stated that the predominant feeling is uncertainty regarding the profitability of the crop, and has called on tomato growers “to reduce planted surfaces this year.”
According to representatives of the smaller farmers, a number of growers have already announced that part of the surfaces usually planted with tomatoes will be used to grow alternative crops this year, like maize or rice.
