Italy: a nationwide coordination set-up for processing tomatoes
Tiberio Raboni and Guglielmo Vaccaro, who respectively represent the processing tomato districts of northern Italy and southern Italy, met at the beginning of March to set up the first nationwide coordination structure for the industry. This is not a first step toward a merger of the two interbranch organizations, who each intend to retain their identity due to the profound differences between the two production regions, but it means that there will be a single national correspondent for the country's political and institutional authorities.

"Our primary objective, explained Tiberio Rabboni, the president of the Pomodoro Nord IO, is to enhance the value of Italian raw materials by creating two "certificates", the first of which applies to fruit quality and the second to environmental issues. These will be used to evaluate companies with the best performances. Following that, we also intend to create a single correspondent for the industry with regard to communication with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, Forestry and Tourism (MIPAAFT), so that we can also take into consideration the growing nationalization of EU policies that is part of the new operational program of the CAP."
The two production regions remain separate, given the specific features of their operations, of their advantages and of the issues with which they have to deal. But in a few weeks, both structures will be called on to approve the agreement and the first operational programs of joint interbranch activities that could be set up by the next crop season.
