In November 2022, we published the following articles:

  • Global Exports of Tomato Paste, updated November 2, 2022.
  • In Portugal, AgriBIT and CCTI (Centro de Competências para o Tomate Indústria) are working on speeding up detection of diseases earlier during the growth period, and delivering the ability to apply corrective measures earlier.
  • The Turkish company DFS Gida is using Tomra's Blizzard sorting machine for dried tomatoes and semi-dried frozen tomatoes.
  • ANICAV, the Italian Association of Canned Vegetable Industries, is the largest association representing the tomato processing companies in the world, in terms of numbers if members and quantity of processed product.
  • Chile accounts for 40% of Sugal's total production. The company will invest 1 billion USD over the next 10 years to develop industrial capacity and help further financing and advising growers.

  • Rising interest rates, inflation and drought are squeezing California's tomato farmers. The final processing for this season was only 86% of the original target.
  • World Trade 2021/2022 (Tomato Sauces, May to April)
  • In Portugal, Sugal announced the creation of an Energy Community at its two production units. The company Energia Unida will install more than 2.500 solar panels, which will allow the energy generated to cover its own consumption as well as sharing the excess energy with other consumers.
  • Iraq's domestic market for tomato products relies heavily on imports, mainly from Iran and Turkey, whereas soil and climatic conditions make the country well suited for tomato production, making the tomato sector a promising one.

  • The Tomato Foundation recently released the compelling results of a large-scale study on whether tomato juice can help prevent blood clots.
  • The aseptic filling technology offers significant environmental benefits compared to the traditional hot filling technique.
  • The EU-wide labeling scheme decision has been pushed forward to 2023. It is also unlikely that they will recommend only one label (part 1 & 2).

  • ANICAV issued a statement to clarify the situation about Chinese tomato products imports.
  • California 2022 Season Highlights, figures from PTAB and CLFP final reports.
  • Jason Fritsch, CEO of Kagome Australia, was elected as the new WPTC President, succeeding Mike Montna. WPTC get a new visual identity with a new logo and a brand new website.
  • The IRI report states that private labels are gaining new market shares, as they now make up 36% of the total FMCG value sales in Europe. Another survey shows that consumers are switching to cheaper brands because of inflation.
  • Luca Sandei, Director of the Fruit and Vegetables Area at SSICA, succeeds Gwen Young as President of the Tomato Foundation.
  • Global Exports of Tomato Paste, updated November 28, 2022.
  • In Italy, the RICREA (National Consortium for the Recycling and Recovery of Steel Packaging), in collaboration with ANICAV and the ANFIMA (Italian National Association of Rigid Metal Packaging Manufacturers), launched a multimedia campaign to raise awareness about the content and meaning of food products labels.
  • California is looking at ways to enhance production of processing tomatoes and reduce the negative impacts of climate change. The Bayer team is working on seed varieties with early maturation, and the state is heavily investing in research and technology.
