In July 2023, we published the following articles:

  • The Italian Casalasco Societa Agricola SpA received a 15 million Euros loan granted by Credit Agricole Italia, and backed by SACE's SupportItalia guarantee. This loan will allow Casalasco to expand its production and reduce its energy and environmental impact.
  • WPTC Crop Update as of 30 June 2023.
  • The Italian group La Doria purchased SIG's solution to strengthen its filling capacity, following increased demand for canned foods. The Safe 12 Food Retort line will fill canned products in SIG SafeBloc carton packs.
  • In California, the Braga Fresh company reports they cover cropping system in tomatoes allowed them to decrease the amount of labor and materials required for cultivation.

  • As part of the VA.PO.RE project launched two years ago, four new tomato varieties have been identified as resistant to mildew and/or Alternaria, and adapted to industrial processing. Those varieties are now ready for distribution throughout Italy.

  • The European Commission might loosen some restrictions on its rules for GMOs, with a view to allow plants resulting from newer gene-editing technology that mutate the existing genomes without adding genes from outside the species.
  • Chile's exports of tomato paste are nearly back to their level pre-pandemic.

  • MINTEC held a webinar in June to comment on the current market environment for metals and the likely short-term evolution of world prices for those materials.

  • The companies NRGene and Philoseed announced that they have successfully completed tests on their ToBRFV-resistant tomato plants.
  • The ToBRFV virus was detected in Argentina and the whole country is now under phytosanitary alert.

  • Iranian tomato paste exports continues to show big fluctuations, in spite of a return to normal this last marketing year.
  • The Italian Casalasco was in New York for the Summer Fancy Food edition and was awarded the New Product Award for its "Pomi Tomato Passata in a Plant Based Box".
  • El Niño conditions have developed in the tropical Pacific. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) expects it to continue until the end of the year.

  • In Spain, the tomato campaign began early in Extremadura, with less production than planned because of the weather conditions.
