  • California: weekly tonnage as of 22 July 2023.
  • In Italy, ANICAV warns that the harvest starts with skyrocketing production costs and falling consumption. The cultivated surface is greater by 5% but the weather remains an unknown factor.
  •  In Algeria, the wilaya of Chlef recorded a huge production increase this year, causing long queues at the factories.
  • In Argentina, the planted surface was increased this season in the Mendoza province, which together with San Juan accounts for more than 80% of the national production.

  • Kraft Heinz is now taking a 10-year approach that should fuel growth and innovation.
  • In Iran, the Kowsar Beh Chin Samin company relaunched the aseptic tomato paste production line, after 20 years, and will be able to product up to two tons per hour at this stage.
  • Global Imports of Tomato Products, updated 10 August 2023.
  • Researchers from the University of California and UC Cooperative extension published a recent study on increasing costs for tomato growers. It seems however that this season could be more profitable for the farmers, thanks to the better price negotiated.

  • The FAO Food Price Index is currently more than 11% below its July 22 level.
  • A new study found that a mutation already discovered in the 1950s (adpressa) makes tomatoes resistant to the blossom-end rot (BER).
  • In California, late planting due to heavy rains during spring might end up causing difficulties at the factories to process the backlog of tomato deliveries.

  • Tetra Pak believes that innovation, legislation and consumers education are all needed in order to decarbonize the packaging system. The company is using paperboard and increasing the use of plant-based material for their packaging.
  • As of the 23rd August, 45% of the quantities contracted in North Italy have been delivered to the industry.
  • Phenix en Provence's new facility in Tarascon, at the Panier Provencal industrial processing site, has been inaugurated in July. It will dry and sort left-over by-products that will later be used, via extraction of the active ingredients, for cosmetics.

  • The OI Pomodoro Nord collected and analyzed data from the industrial tomato sector during the 2022 season.
  • The Campbell Soup Co. is planning to acquire Sovos Brands, a manufacturer of sauces, yogurts and frozen prepared foods.
  • In Extremadura, the harvest is in full swing and could reach 2 million tonnes this year, half a million more than last year, if the weather allows it.
