The USDA revised the contracted production estimate for California processing tomatoes to 9,525,000 metric tonnes (10,500,000 short tons) averaging 105 mT/ha (46.9 sT per acre) on a projected 90,650 ha (224,000 acres). The current production forecast is 10% below the May forecast. Over the last five years, the actual harvest has been less than the August forecast – four out of five years.

According to the figures collected by PTAB regarding the 2022 California processing tomato harvest, 819,320 metric tonnes (mT) (903,146 short tons (sT)) were delivered to the factories for week nine (ending September 3rd). Week ten (ending September 10th) is estimated to be 830,984 mT (916,003 sT) which would bring the year-to-date total to an estimated 6,388,740 mT (7,042,380 sT).
For actual tons delivered through week eight (4.738 million mT), California is tracking below (-19.4%) the five year average (5.844 million mT). Data collected by PTAB show that YTD solids amount to 5.42 compared to 5.32 for the same time period in the 2021 season, or 0.10 higher. There were 202,542 loads delivered as of August 27, 2022, or 24,828 less than in 2021 for same time period.

The 2022 California Organic processing tomato deliveries for the week eight (ending August 27th) were 30,617 mT (33753 sT). The total tons YTD for week eight is 424,550 mT (467,986 sT), or 9% of the actual total delivered quantities. Provisional total is 15% lower than in 2021 on the same date and 8% higher than the average quantity processed during past three seasons at this time.

If the weekly projections come true, the projected quantities on September 10 would represent approximately 67% of the newly revised California processors' target (9.53 million mT, or 10.5 million sT).
