The US industry is on track to reach half of its target
According to the figures collected by PTAB, the 2022 California processing tomato deliveries are increasing again after the slight decline recorded in week six. For week eight (ending August 27th) PTAB is estimating 796,295 metric tonnes (mT) (877,765 short tons (sT)) were delivered to the factories. Week nine (ending September 3rd) is estimated to be 821,762 mT (905,837 sT) which would bring the year-to-date total to an estimated 5,562,019 mT (6,131,076 sT).
For actual tons delivered through week seven (3.943 million mT), California is tracking below (-20.5%) the five year average (4.963 mT). Data collected by PTAB show that YTD solids amount to 5.46 compared to 5.33 for the same time period in the 2021 season, or 0.13 higher. There were 167,867 loads delivered as of August 20, 2022, or 22,488 less than 2021 for same time period.
The 2022 California Organic processing tomato deliveries for the week seven (ending August 20th) were 19,019 mT (20,967 sT). The total tons YTD for week seven is 393,930 mT (434,233 sT), or 10% of the actual total delivered quantities. Provisional total is 13% lower than in 2021 on the same date and 11% higher than the average quantity processed during past three seasons at this time.
If the weekly projections come true, the projected quantities on September 3 would represent approximately 52% of the California processors' target. (10.6 million mT). The general industry opinion is that the 2022 California crop will be less than the USDA estimate of 10.6 million mT (11.7 million sT).
