Tomato Foundation Sample Study Fund: ALMOST THERE!
The Tomato Foundation is happy to announce it has almost reached its target fund of 160,000€ to begin the tomato paste and products sample study, which is the next essential step towards their goal of achieving a health claim for tomato products and improved blood flow.
During the last 6 months they have gained supporters from around the world and, almost more important than the economic support, has been the promise of collaboration to provide samples of tomato paste from multiple territories pulled from this year’s pack season.

The sample study is due to begin in January of 2019 and will be carried out at SSICA in Parma. Some simple tomato products like puree, pasta and juice will be included. The Foundation's aim is to exceed their target fund so they can include more consumer products and also study the effects of storage and packaging across a range of everyday consumer tomato products. The sample study results will provide the proof of concept needed to progress their application for EC funding for the rest of the project. Based on existing data, they expect to find high concentrations of the target bioactive compounds in tomato paste and products at high levels. This essential first step lays the foundation for the health claim.
Only companies that join the Health Claim Project Consortium will have access to the ongoing scientific results and be guaranteed a licence of use of the health claim during its initial 5 year protected status.
