The 2021 processing tomato season has begun throughout Northern Italy, the inter-professional organization OI Pomodoro da Industria del Nord Italia, with harvesting in the field and processing in the factory now at full capacity, takes stock of the situation: In Northern Italy 38,621 hectares are cultivated, organic is growing (4 thousand hectares) but with the hailstorms of recent days, 6% of the total surface area has been lost.

The actual areas cultivated with tomatoes for processing as of June 30 in the territory of Northern Italy amounted to 38,621 hectares, of which 4,022 hectares of organic production and 34,599 hectares of integrated production, ie with a low environmental impact system.

Organic confirms the growing trend, in response to market requests, reaching 10.40% of the total surfaces.

The start of the campaign: damage from hail and good degree of brix
The launch of the 2021 campaign was not the easiest in terms of weather. As of 1 August (latest update available), 7.33% of the quantities of tomatoes in the field had been harvested, with a delay in the quantities delivered compared to the same date in previous years. However, the raw material delivered is characterized by a brix degree of 5.17, well above the average for the period, and by an excellent result in fruit colour.

During the meeting, the OI communicated the outcome of the survey on the surfaces affected by hail, carried out at the request of the members, due to the hailstorms that occurred in particular on July 26, in the western and central areas of the territory of Northern Italy. The affected areas are between 2,200 hectares and 2,500 hectares, over 6% of the fields planted with tomatoes, with different levels of damage to crops and an estimated loss of production between 80,000 and 100,000 tonnes.

Election of the Coordination Committee
During the assembly, the new Coordination Committee was elected, an equal expression of the agricultural and industrial components. Bruna Saviotti and Paolo Gazza were elected Vice-Presidents while Tiberio Rabboni was confirmed as President.
