In September 2024, we published the following articles:

  • In Chile, Empresas Carozzi, which started its partnership with CFT in the 1980s with evaporators and sterilizers, now installed its first ART3MIS Longrun MVR evaporator.
  • In China, specifically in the Xinjiang region, legislators increased support for US-sanctioned companies and called for the creation of "a positive social environment".
  • Francesco Rossi (Rossi Ingegneria Alimentare) held a conference during the World Processing Tomato Congress in Budapest on The role of technology in the ecological transition: challenges and opportunities.
  • Chinese tomato pastes, which so far were mainly exported to West Africa, are now also benefitting from the explosion of demand in the Middle East region, and particularly from Iraqi operators.
  • The OI Pomodoro Nord Italia drew up an initial assessment of the season: low yields, record quality, high agricultural and processing costs. They expect a shortage of product at the end of the campaign.

  • Latest estimates on China 2024 crop are a maximum of 10.45 million tonnes. !06 factories are currently running and the price of raw materials is down 20%.

  • FBR-Elpo launched the new JET aseptic filler for the Bag in Box market and with higher performances.
  • In Fresno County, tomato production accounts for more than 25% of California's production. Farmers rotate cotton with tomatoes.
  • In South Africa, the FMCG company Tiger Brands is supporting two tomato-growing regions, Musina and Lutzville and operates two processing plants for tomato paste which is further processed in another plant. In Musina, their supply comes from more than 100 local farmers.

  • In India, a new tomato processing plant should be built in Kuppam (Andhra Pradesh) and entrusted to the Farmers' Cooperative Society of the region.
  • The National Democratic Congress administration in Ghana has decided to build a tomato processing plant in the Bono region, as the country relies significantly on imports so far.

  • In Italy, the season is tough in both regions but for different reasons, early ripening and water shortage in the South and a lot of rainfall in the North.
  • In California, the fungal disease southern blight has spread to Sacramento Valley fields, where it used to be rare.
  • In North Italy, the region of Emilia Romagna is heavily affected by flood and tomatoes are particularly at risk.

  • Tomato Paste Prices, September 2024: USA, Spain, Portugal, Italy, China and Chile.
  • In Spain, a recent study from CTAEX during the 2023 season showed that the processing tomato sector could compensate for its own CO2 emissions.
  • During the WPTC congress in June, the FunTomP project (Functional Tomato Products) aims to create healthier, more sustainable, high-quality tomato-based products. Some examples are Microwave pasteurization for tomato sauces, tomato leather as a healthy snack, spray-dried tomato powders, hyperspectral imaging for lycopene analysis, hubrid drying techniques and turning pomace into value.
  • In Morocco, an anti-dumping duty of 29.93% on imports of Egyptian tomato paste is in force for a period of 6 months.
  • Some recent studies suggest that France will to adapt and potentially move its processing tomato cultivation due to climate change.
