In May 2022, we published the following articles:

  • Prices of Canned Tomatoes, May 2022: Italy, Spain, USA, Greece, Portugal.
  • Consorzio Casalasco del Pomodoro got the green light to complete the acquisition of 73,8% of Emiliana Conserve.
  • A few green, organic and innovative products have been launched in Europe: a 100% sustainable tomato pulp from Cirio, an organic version of Domino's Pizza sauces and ready-made sauces with 100% Italian Datterino tomatoes from Cirio.
  • Denmark's government is funding the development of a climate label for food.  Meanwhile, other environmental labels are entering the market, such as Eco-Score, Planet-Score and one from Foundation Earth.
  • Dott. Carlo Leoni, a very well known researcher in the international tomato-processing sector, died on May 5, 2022.
  • A new research from UCLA suggests that a certain type of tomato concentrate can help reduce intestinal inflammation associated with HIV.
  • José María Vadillo Hurtado, currently PhD student at CICYTEX, won the ISHS Young Minds Award for his presentation: "Development of a methodology to characterize the nitrogen nutritional status of open field processing tomato by means of fast indicators.
  • Global Imports of Tomato Products, updated 9 May 2022.
  • In the USA, the FDA will conduct 2 surveys in order to find a front-of-pack "healthy" symbol.  However, a new definition of "healthy" by the FDA is pending since 2016.
  • Summary of the presentation given by Pr. Montaña Cámara during the WPTC Congress in March 2022 on the impact of front-of-package nutrition labeling systems on tomato products.
  • The EU has started a consultation process for the revision of the Food Information to Consumers (FIC) regulation, as today two Font of Pack Nutrition Labeling (FOPNL) co-exist: Nutri-Score and Nutrinform Battery.
  • In Italy, although the Northern region managed to reach a price agreement with an unprecedented increase, the South-Central region has not been able to come to an agreement.
  • Paste Prices, May 2022: USA, Spain, Portugal, Italy, China, Chile.
  • New-Zealand has seen the highest yields in 50-year history, 5% higher than the previous highest yield.
  • With regards to the lack of agreement on the South-Central region, ANICAV expresses that the demands from agricultural partners are "unjustified" and likely to put "an entire industry in danger".
  • Trade statistics for the UK for 2021 show a dramatic drop in canned tomato purchases, while imports of sauces were maintained or increased.
  • The Umberto Veronesi Foundation, with the help of ANICAV and RICREA, hosted their event "Il Pomodoro per la Ricerca" and raised 500,000 Euros for pediatric oncology.
  • The price of Carbon allowance in the EU has increased again and is now at 88 Euros/tonne (as of May 4th).
  • California is entering its 3rd year of severe drought, putting a lot of pressure on growers already in a tough spot due to all recent increases.

  • A partnership between Ingomar Packing Company and Botanical Water Technologies (BWT) is working on a solution to produce plant-based drinking water in America, solution that could help fight the drought in California.
  • Cibus Tec Forum 2022 will offer in two days (25 & 26 October) the discovery of the most innovative solutions and most influential trends on producing, packaging and distributing.
