In January 2023, we published the following articles:

  • Global Exports of Tomato Paste, updated January 3, 2023.
  • The December 2022 report from Mintec on Commodity price movements shows a decline of 1% m-o-m in October in the Global Packaging Category Index (MCI).

  • Italian companies such as Mutti and Rosso Gargano had a nightmare summer with a huge increase in energy and packaging material costs, on top of drought.
  • In Algeria, tomato production has seen a significant drop in 2022, and it might drop further, causing the country to probably have to import tomato paste.
  • The ISHS Acta Horticulturae 1351 contains 42 scientific articles reporting the proceedings of the XVI International Symposium on the Processing Tomato, which was held virtually in San Juan in 2022. It is now published and available for sale on the ISHS website.

  • In California, the weather pattern may be transitioning from dry to wet, and whereas the Sierra snowpack is good news, the river storms are flooding parts of the state.
  • Paolo Mascarino was appointed President of Federalimentare, the Italian Federation for the Food and Beverages Industry. During its annual General Assembly, Marco Serafini was chosen as Vice-President.
  • Global Imports of Tomato Products, updated 17 January 2023.
  • In California, the CTGA issued a bulletin in November on the exchange of offers for the 2023 growing season, showing a substantial increase in prices.
  • Transcript of the presentation given by Alistair Blake (AMITOM President & Merko, Turkey) during the 2022 Tomato News Conference on the 2022 processing season in the AMITOM countries.
  • Josyane Chapelle and François-Xavier Branthôme received the medal of "Chevalier de l'Ordre du Mérite Agricole) awarded by the French Minister of Agriculture.
  • In Portugal, a pioneering project called "TomAC – sustainable tomato production through the implementation of conservation agriculture principles" reported encouraging preliminary results.
  • Tomato Paste Prices, January 2023: USA, Spain, Portugal, Italy, China, Chile.
  • The IO Pomodoro Nord Italia accepted 3 new members: Consorzio Casalasco del Pomodoro Soc. Agr. Cooperative, Casalasco Societa Agricola Spa and Vallu Estensi Srl, thereby now representing 100% of the organized production sector and more than 99% of the processing industry in Northern Italy.
  • The Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) food price index is up 14,3% from 2021, and the highest s since 1990.

  • In Italy, price negotiations are currently at a standstill in the northern region, but ANICAV is confident that they will resume shortly.
