Negotiations remain at a standstill regarding the modalities of the next tomato processing campaign in Italy's northern basin.

According to the press release published on April 29, 2023 in Parma, "the industrial delegation that participated in the last meeting between the various parties, aware that the duration of current discussions could jeopardize the virtuous model of relations within the sector, proposed a decisive innovation to modernize the mode of contractualization, precisely in order to reach an agreement in the shortest possible time.

As explained by the ANICAV, the proposal provides for a two-year contract (2023 and 2024) that aims to guarantee the stability of the sector, ensure a fair remuneration for agricultural producers, and at the same time, allow for better and more efficient planning of production. The proposed average reference price, set for both years, is EUR 135 /mT, 24% higher than last year. This amount would imply, for the companies that are members of the ANICAV, an investment of approximately EUR 50 million, which would make processing tomatoes one of the most remunerative crops. The industry, aware of the increased risk exposure resulting from the two-year duration of the proposed agreement, has indicated its willingness to provide new and concrete negotiating features.

In a market characterized by the high volatility of crop prices, a two-year agreement represents an important innovation for the agricultural sector, guaranteeing commitments and continuity of production.

Furthermore, in order to be able to reach an agreement in all cases, the ANICAV negotiating delegation also proposed an alternative in a clear, guaranteed and transparent manner, as usual : an annual contract with an even higher average reference price, amounting to EUR 140 /mT, which is 29% higher than in 2022, to also take into account the eventuality of drought.

The ANICAV hopes that the proposals will be considered with determination, a sense of responsibility and a strong spirit of collaboration, in order to maintain a sector that without doubt represents the flagship of Italian food production and processing."
