ANICAV: "We are asking for the contract to be respected and the average price adjusted to match the real increases, in order to safeguard one of the most important industries in southern Italy."

Ensuring greater competitiveness for a sector that is strategically and economically important for the whole of southern Italy: this was the central topic of the recent meeting between tomato growers and processors from the south-central basin. Although the exchange was constructive, it did not lead to any agreement on the average reference price of tomatoes for the coming season.

Despite the fact that several aspects of production are already registering reductions in costs, the industry has declared its willingness to accept a price increase in addition to the one already applied during last season, and has proposed an average reference price of EUR 140 /mT for round tomatoes and EUR 145 /mT for oblong ones.

"With a great sense of responsibility," says Marco Serafini, President of ANICAV, "we have proposed an average reference price that takes into account the actual increases in production costs and which, over two years, has led to an increase of about 35%.  Any other proposed increase, in the economic situation we are in, would not be sustainable by our industries, which would be forced to pass on the higher costs to the end consumer."
