The Princes Industrie Alimentari (PIA) factory in Foggia (Italy) will have a new highly efficient cogeneration system to provide electricity in addition to free steam and hot water for manufacturing use.

The system is based on a natural gas motor that will be coupled to an electrical generator to allow the local production of 800 kWep for internal uses. The exhausts will be so re-used into an high efficiency recovery boiler to produce free steam. This, in addition with the free hot water recovered from the motor cooling will be completely internally supplied and used in order to globally reduce the energy needs and the improve the site carbon footprint.
The Cogen@PIA project is developed in partnership with CGT/CAT and will allow PIA to have a local and reliable energy source and will decrease the site CO2 emissions of more than 1000 ton/year (that is equal to removing the equivalent emissions of about 500 cars per each year, or having saved about 850 acres of forests).

The Cogen plant will be in operation before the 2021 tomato season.
