Nigeria bans tomato products imports

On 27 March, the Nigerian federal government banned the importation of tomato paste, powder or concentrate, and increased the tariffs on imports of tomato concentrate from 5% to 50% in order to revive the tomato sector.
According to operators, between 2015 and 2016, a total of 189 510.11 metric tonnes of tomato paste were imported into Nigeria. “This is equivalent to 1 042 305.68 metric tonnes of fresh tomatoes.” The value of imported tomato paste in Nigeria is about USD 170 million, and USD 50 million is spent on triple-concentrated tomato paste.
