Mono-PE, a promising alternative to aluminum
Goglio was present at the 2022 edition of the ALL4PACK Emballage Paris trade show, which took place from November 21 to 24, 2022. The company distinguished itself by winning the ALL4PACK Innovation trophy, in the "Design and Ergonomics" category.

Goglio is a leader in the production of complete packaging systems, suitable for all requirements. The Italian multinational, which employs nearly 2,000 people, is known for its unique range of offers, which include packaging machines, individual components, and flexible and long-lasting packaging materials for the food industry.

"There is a revolution underway in our sector of reference, expressed mainly by two distinct aspects. The first is the integration of new technologies of the 4.0 industry, taking us resolutely into the era of digitalization, with machines that can be connected in order to improve their productivity. The second is the gradual move away from aluminum as a barrier material to new, more environmentally sustainable solutions," says Philippe Weiss, Goglio's European Sales Director.

In addition to demonstrating a packaging machine suitable for use with PE-based mono-material packaging and connected to Goglio's "Mind" Cloud interface, the Italian food packaging specialist's booth also featured its latest innovations in the field of flexible and long-lasting sustainable packaging. The company won the ALL4PACK Innovation "Design and Ergonomics" award in this 2022 edition for its PillowUp packaging.

The PillowUp is a flexible flat pack bag with "doypack" features that allow it to stand upright. This new food packaging, also called the "Smart Pack 2 in 1", combines the best of both worlds thanks to its unique features. Its patented base shape gives it the advantages of both flat pouches and "doypack" bags. It is equipped with a handle and a spout for easy handling, and a plastic cap can also be fitted if required.

Fully customizable by the customer, the PillowUp is a preformed high protective barrier packaging made from multilayer laminated strips, making it a Goglio exclusive allowing a higher production rate on the packaging lines. The packaging is available either in an aluminum version, or in a fully recyclable version based on PE mono material.

Mono-material pillow UP®
Pouch responsible, sustainable

What it is. The pillow UP® pouch created by Goglio’s R&D team is the evolved version of the pouch already successfully introduced on the market and used for tomato products, to which a dispenser cap for liquid detergent products has been added. The plus of the pouch lies in the material with which it is made: mono-material polyethylene in fact corresponds to the most current requirements of sustainability, and the solution thus formulated is defined as “ready for recycling”.

Materials. Double laminate and dispensing cap in single-material polyethylene.

Product or target market. Non-food liquid products, particularly detergents.

Design and/or communication. Shaped 2-liter flexible bag with handle and dispensing cap. It has a dual functionality that is indicated in its name: it can be laid flat in boxes suitable for transport (like a “pillow pouch”) or it can be placed on a surface presenting itself as a “stand up” without the aid of a flat oval bottom.

Technology. A protective lacquer is applied to the outside to ensure that the printing and welding are well sealed, both aesthetically and functionally. This also allows the material to be processed industrially without difficulty, for optimal results.
Finally, the pouches are filled on the automatic lines of the GNova range, designed by the Group’s Machine Division.

Sustainability. The pillow UP® solution is “ready for recycling”, made of mono-material polyethylene with a quantity of raw materials reduced to the minimum necessary, according to the content. With the right measures, the packaging can also be reused in future applications. The flexible packaging by its very nature occupies a reduced volume when empty, with savings in terms of logistics, and avoids product waste, since rolling the container on itself allows for complete emptying. At the moment of use, it is also easy to handle and closely matches consumer requirements.
