During March, the Azerbaijani press revealed the conclusions of an official report from the National Statistics Committee according to which overall exports of Azerbaijan’s fruit and vegetable sector have fallen by more than 20% in January and February 2020 compared to the same period of the previous year.
However, the same official report states that Azerbaijani exports of tomato pastes have increased by 25.1% in terms of quantity and +38.8% in terms of value over one year, reaching 19 112 tonnes and USD 24.7 million for the first two months of 2020 (compared to just under 15 300 mT in January-February 2019).
Azerbaijan is an exporter of fresh fruit and vegetables, in particular hazelnuts (22 600 mT), apples (96 800 mT) and persimmons (146 000 mT), for an annual tonnage and value of nearly 629 000 tonnes and USD 606 million (2019 values). But the main exported product was tomato paste, with volumes reaching 174 500 tonnes in 2019.

In its report, the Statistics Committee emphasizes that “agriculture is the fastest growing non-oil sector of the Azerbaijani economy. Ongoing reforms in the agricultural sector have had a significant impact on the development of the country's economy, through the efficient use of land and goods, and the improvement of the structure of the agricultural sphere and entrepreneurship. […] Azerbaijan produces an abundance of fruits and vegetables, a situation that allows the country to be self-sufficient in terms of the production of agricultural products.”
