Tomato waste is now being used in cosmetics
A French company, Phenix en Provence, a joint-venture between the Coopérative Agricole Provence Languedoc (CAPL) and Inaturals, was launched in 2021 as a supplier of organic and recycled ingredients, by valorizing the co-products resulting from tomato processing at the Panier Provençal factory in the south of France, namely: the skins, the seeds and the tomato hydrolate.
These co-products, that would otherwise go to waste, are now used to make coveted organic cosmetic ingredients. The range of recycled ingredients, under the Intelligene® brand, was launched in April 2022 and is composed of:
– Intelligene Water, the organic fruit hydrolate, derived from the vegetable water of the fruit during the concentration of the tomato in sauce;
– Intelligene Oil, a tomato seed oil rich in Omega-6 fatty acids;
– Intelligene Defense, a cosmetic active ingredient containing natural penta-cyclic triterpens of the tomato.

Phénix en Provence is currently collecting donations (with or without counterpart) on the participative financing site Miimosa.com. The money collected will allow the company to invest in a production line which will allow the drying, sorting and the complete and automated traceability of co-products generated by le Panier Provençal.
