Following a long and difficult negotiations between the different parties (see our previous articles below) and as the tomato processing season is currently starting in some areas, the both Coldiretti and CIA reported on 17 July that some Processors Organizations had finally signed contracts with processors at the indicative price of 105 euros per tonne for round tomatoes and 115 euros per tonne for long tomatoes.
"Better late than never," said Michele Ferrandino, provincial president of CIA Capitanata. "We had asked for an agreement to be finally reached and we greet with cautious satisfaction the achievement of an agreement that avoids the law of the jungle. This agreement is a basis so that, in the immediate future, we can do even better, since the production prices for the South are higher than those sustained in northern Italy. " He added that “the Covid-19 emergency made working conditions, research and availability of labor much more difficult, while climate change with the alternation of drought and storms raised business risk to the highest levels and to lose the crop in whole or in part.”
The 2020 prices quoted by the organizations are ten euros higher than the industry-wide agreement for the 2019 season (95 euros per tonne for round tomatoes and 105 euros per tonne for long tomatoes). Some companies have signed at a higher price and others at a lower price, and with various conditions, which makes it difficult to estimate the price which will actually be paid, but they can be considered as the averages for this season.
