Southern Italy: Will the Ministry of Agriculture intervene?

In the context of negotiations regarding the price of the “tomato” raw materials for the 2020 season in southern Italy, agricultural operators have asked for help from the processing tomatoes interbranch organization of the south-central region.
 On 29 June, local press sources reported that the President of Italy’s south-central IO, following requests received from representatives of the agricultural sector, had called on the MIPAAF (Italian Ministry of Agricultural Policies, Food and Forestry) to step in and set up “mediation with representatives of the industrial sector to reopen negotiations on the price of raw materials, in order to sign an agreement valid for the 2020 season that is underway.”
Several stakeholders have deplored the climate of extreme tension that has developed since the start of the negotiations. A tomato grower recently explained that “it is unthinkable to start harvesting without agreeing on a predetermined price; moreover, it is not possible to rely on the free market for price discussions, and it is therefore necessary to reopen negotiations and set a price.” Although they did not express themselves at the meeting on 22 June (see our articles in related documents), agricultural partners intend to reach an agreement with processors before the start of the harvest season.
