On 28 January, growers and processors in the North of Italy agreed on a reference price close to 145 euros for the 2025 season, while in the South discussions will start in February.

After the difficulties that characterised the 2024 campaign, mainly linked to the extremely negative weather conditions that damaged both farmers and industries, delegations from the agricultural and industrial sides met in Parma on 28 January and reached the Northern Area Framework Agreement for the 2025 tomato production and processing campaign in record time.

The agreement envisages a strong joint action for the defence and valorisation of the supply chain and production, introducing some changes to the qualitative criteria of the raw material that will affect the average reference price to close to 145 euros per tonne ex-field. In 2024, no agreement could be found between the two parties and the price paid was between 135 and 140 euros per tonne.

OI Pomodoro da industria Nord Italia President, Giuseppe Romanini, expressed “great satisfaction on the part of the Interprofessional Organisation Tomato for Industry North Italy (IO) for reaching the framework agreement in a rapid and above all useful time for the organisation, planning and management of the 2025 campaign. The timeliness of the agreement will put the supply chain in the best position to respond effectively to the difficult situation that occurred in the previous campaign. This is an important achievement, all the more so after the failure of the 2024 agreement. In this context, it is appreciable that the parties have decided to work jointly and responsibly for the defence and enhancement of the sector, interpreting the spirit of loyal cooperation that underlies the very existence of the IO: transparency, data sharing, and planning translate into concrete elements of competitiveness.

On the industrial side, Bruna Saviotti, coordinator of the ANICAV Northern Basin Territorial Committee declared that “
The agreement reached represents an important moment of recovery of the unity of the supply chain. The agreement, which is certainly onerous for the processing industry, all the more so in light of the complex international trade situation and the increase in the price of some production factors, in particular energy, will allow the agricultural side to start planning in good time",  while Marco Serafini, President of ANICAV, said ‘’We express our satisfaction with the signing of the Framework Agreement in the Northern Basin, even though it is an agreement that will weigh heavily on company costs. We are increasingly convinced that dialogue with the agricultural side is a fundamental element for our supply chain. Also in Central South we are almost at a good point for the closure of the Agreement: within the IO Basin Central South we are working on obtaining a binding agreement and the discussion has been postponed to next 11 February.”

A volume of more than 3.2 million tonnes is expected to be processed in the North of Italy in 2025 due to the out of stock situation and reduced quantities processed in 2024 (2.37 million tonnes in the North, 5.27 million tonnes in total). The current estimate for Italy is 5.6 million tonnes.
