Global Exports of Tomato Paste, Updated October 16, 2023
Comparison of monthly exports of tomato paste (HS code 200290) over past two years, comparison with the previous three marketing years (July-June periods)
Important notice: for this edition, several important figures were not available, so that July 2023 result for total TOP10 activity could not be established; the available national results have nevertheless been updated.
As the start of the new season approaches, monthly exported quantities decrease in most processing countries.
However, data available for global exports over the full marketing year (July 2022 – June 2023) confirm the year-on-year increase (+6%) commented on in our previous reports. This increase brings the total global exports recorded over a period of twelve months at (3.63 million metric tonnes (t)).
With a total quantity of slightly less than 3.38 million t of tomato paste exported over the period July 2022 – June 2023, TOP10 annual exports of tomato paste were higher (4.6%, around 147 000 t) than in the previous twelve months (July 2021 – June 2022).
The twelve-month activity level of TOP10 exporting countries is also higher by 101,700 t (3.1%) compared to the same period of the previous three years. TOP10 trade activity now stands at higher levels (just below 10%) than in the three years prior to the Covid pandemic.
The ten countries presented accounted for 94.5% of the sector’s total exports on average over the last five years, with the remaining 5.5% distributed over approximately 80 countries.
For each of the ten countries (China, Italy, Spain, USA, Portugal, Chile, Turkey, Greece, and Iran) that play a significant role in international trade, Tomato News presents a comparison of the monthly performances for exports of tomato paste over past two years. For greater clarity, the histograms present (blue dotted lines) the curve of the average activity of the same months of the three previous marketing years.
This situation makes it possible to follow the evolution of national export dynamics and to compare recent performances with those of equivalent periods of the previous year. These elements of international trade also give a better understanding of the quantities on which the average values presented in our articles on tomato paste prices were constructed.
