“The challenge of the future will be to promote organic production among younger consumers by focusing on very specific drivers, including trust in certification processes.”

The commitment of ANICAV, the Italian National Association of Vegetable Food Preserves Processors, is to promote organic tomato preserves by enhancing all their main characteristics of sustainability, healthiness and taste. ANICAV, as part of the project “Red Gold From Europe – your organic and sustainable choice!” participates in the edition of the Nordic Organic Food Fair, the largest trade fair in Northern Europe held in Stockholm on 9 and 10 October 2024.

Organic preserves represent an important production for the processing tomato industry, also by virtue of the growing awareness of consumers who are increasingly attentive to the quality of the products they bring to the table and to environmental protection. A trend that is especially evident in the Northern European area and in particular in the four target countries of the project: Sweden, Germany, Holland and Denmark.

“The Nordic Organic Food Fair is certainly a great international showcase for the promotion of our excellent products appreciated all over the world – declares  Giovanni De Angelis, General Manager of ANICAV  – About 75% of Italian organic tomato production is destined for export. With this type of activity we aim to promote its consumption even more by further increasing the market share in the four target countries. The domestic consumption trend is also growing but we know that the challenge of the future will be to promote organic production among younger consumers by focusing on very specific drivers, including trust in certification processes with a consequent increase in sales, which in turn would generate a desirable reduction in costs. It will therefore be essential to implement, also with the involvement of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty, and Forestry, support actions aimed at developing increasingly aware consumption”.

In recent years in Italy on average over 8% of the hectares of tomatoes cultivated have been destined for organic while the production has represented approximately 7% of the total processed tomatoes. After the 2023 season characterized by a drop in production, in particular in the Northern basin due essentially to the adverse weather conditions that have caused a significant reduction in agricultural yields, the 2024 production has been characterized by an excellent quality of the organic product for which an increase in production is estimated.
