According to the local press, the processing season was launched at the beginning of week 17 (22-28 April) in a factory set up in the Reggane region (150 km south of Adrar, 1 350 km southeast of Algiers), manufacturing triple concentrated paste made from locally harvested processing tomatoes.
Situation in the Mediterranean region as of Tuesday 24 April and forecasts for the following days.
Tomatoes are processed in the processing plant that used to be run by Foggara, but which was recently taken over by a private investor after lying dormant for a couple of decades. The financial help granted by the Algerian states has helped the processing capacity of the plant to grow from 250 to 1 500 metric tonnes (mT) per day.
The factory is supplied with raw materials by 75 growers who harvest on 1 170 hectares of tomatoes fields. According to press sources, the surfaces dedicated to processing tomatoes are expected to increase to approximately 5 000 hectares over the coming years.
This investment has benefited from the financial support and the advisory input of the Bank of Agriculture and Rural Development, which has declared itself willing to "get alongside those who are driving the project and want to invest in this region."
The initial objective of the project is to meet part of the "domestic needs for this widely consumed food product," according to the wali in charge of the Adrar wilaya (territorial division).
