Gazpacho on a Cone
Every August, the town of Buñol, close to Valencia, hosts La Tomatina, where thousands of adults voluntarily turn themselves into human bruschetta, hurling 150 tons of overripe tomatoes through the air. You leave with seeds in your ears, acid in your eyes, and a deep appreciation for high-pressure water hoses.
It is loud, primal, and absurd. But this year, the chaos jumped out of the street battle and straight into the freezer.
Enter Heladería Al Bacio in Valencia’s historic center. Deciding that pulverized street-salad wasn’t enough, they rolled out a limited-edition creation that has left people in a state of mild existential panic: Tomatina Tomato Ice Cream.

Or, as traditionalists call it, Gazpacho on a Cone.
Al Bacio churned real tomatoes with sweet pepper, extra virgin olive oil, and a pinch of sea salt. The result is a silky sorbet that triggers an instant sensory crisis:
- What your eyes see: A lovely, cheerful strawberry scoop on a sunny afternoon.
- What your brain expects: Sweet, creamy, childhood nostalgia.
- What your tongue gets: A cold, velvety slap of chilled garden soup.

It completely short-circuits your brain. Is it a stroke of gourmet genius, or did someone accidentally drop a waffle cone into the salad bar?
Either way, it’s the ultimate pacifist’s way to experience La Tomatina—all the flavor, zero flying projectiles. If you order a scoop in Valencia this summer, just eat it quickly. Because nobody likes lukewarm gazpacho dripping onto their shoes.
