While Northern Hemisphere processors were fully focused on the summer processing campaign, several new products made their debut in the retail landscape. Mainly centered around the spreads and sauces categories, though not exclusively, these releases highlight how brands are rethinking classic tomato-based foods to meet evolving consumer preferences.

Saltie: Savory Protein Spreads (France)

The first standout release comes from France: a new line of savory spreads developed by Saltie, a French startup founded by two women food-industry professionals who set out to create delicious, natural, and health-focused options.

Formulated and manufactured in Auvergne, the recipes were validated by a Michelin-starred chef. The range includes seven distinct flavors, engineered with a smooth, rich texture similar to peanut butter that spreads easily onto bread without tearing it. Additionally, the products boast an extended shelf life at room temperature, even after the jar has been opened.

Formulated to be 100% natural and completely free of additives and preservatives, the spreads are also certified vegan, gluten-free, and lactose-free. Among the product lineup, the Tomato & Basil spread, crafted using dried tomatoes and basil, delivers a substantial 40 g of protein per jar, blending gourmet flavor with functional nutrition.

Nudj: Vegetarian Rillettes (France)

Also originating in France, Nudj has expanded its presence in the spreadable category with the introduction of three plant-based rillettes variants.

Two of the three new varieties, the Spicy and Campagnarde flavors, incorporate tomato paste into their recipes. This new line builds on Nudj’s existing plant-based range, which already features a popular vegetarian burger patty formulated with tomato paste.

Salsaretti Alimentos: Protein-Enriched Passata (Brazil)

On the other side of the Atlantic, Brazilian producer Salsaretti Alimentos is bringing functional nutrition to traditional cooking ingredients with the launch of a protein-boosted passata.

By incorporating hydrolyzed collagen protein into a rustic tomato passata base, the company has created a functional product while maintaining an exceptionally clean and simple ingredient list: pure tomato and hydrolyzed collagen protein.

Positioned as a premium offering in glass jar packaging, the passata comes in two size options:

  • 55 g of protein in the 680 g package
  • 33 g of protein in the 410 g package

Heinz: Seasonal Flavors & Interactive Packaging (USA & UK)

On the packaging and product innovation front, Heinz continues to demonstrate how clever structural design and seasonal buzz can re-energize iconic consumer products with two notable summertime and autumn releases:

The Love Lid (USA): Available for a limited time exclusively at Walmart, this innovative bottle cap completely reimagines how consumers interact with their ketchup bottle. The customizable lid features three adjustable flow settings, “Like,” “Love,” and “Crazy Love”, allowing fans to dial in their precise portion control whether they are dipping fries, drizzling a hot dog, or generously topping a burger.

“People have deeply personal rituals around how much ketchup they squeeze, and we celebrate every one of them,” said Nina Patel, Vice President, Global HEINZ at The Kraft Heinz Company. “The Love Lid is an innovation that lets consumers squeeze to their heart’s content.”

The Chilli Bite Ketchup (UK): Capitalizing on seasonal momentum ahead of Halloween, Kraft Heinz has added a limited-edition Chilli Bite Ketchup to its UK lineup. According to Kantar Worldpanel data, UK Halloween spending reached £2 billion in 2023 and continues to climb, with 91% of consumers purchasing Halloween-related items. Heinz is tapping into this booming “spooky season” market with a fiery twist. Described as sweet, tangy, and bold, the sauce delivers enough heat to satisfy spice seekers while remaining approachable for everyday Halloween gatherings and food occasions.

This roundup of recent launches demonstrates clear emerging trends across the global processed tomato sector. On one hand, brands like Saltie, Nudj, and Salsaretti Alimentos are tapping into the growing demand for healthy, clean-label, and protein-rich formulations—transforming traditional tomato spreads and passatas into functional nutrition. On the other, legacy leaders like Heinz show that creative packaging innovations and limited-time seasonal flavor releases remain powerful tools to engage consumers, drive retail enthusiasm, and build brand affinity around key calendar events.
