A total of 14,060 hectares were planted in Tunisia this year which should produce a total of 850,000 tonnes of tomatoes, of which  580,000 tonnes should be processed into tomato paste and 20,000 tonnes into canned tomatoes, the difference either dried or sold on the fresh matket.
The heatwave which affected tunisia between 25 and 28 June activated fruit maturation and will result in grouped maturation and shortening of the season. 7 factories opened on 28 June, just after the Eid celebrations, with tomatoes from the Centre of the country. Most of the other factories started on 3 July when the Cap Bon region got into full swing.
It is expected that 95,000 tonnes of tomato paste and 13,000 tonnes of canned tomatoes will be produced this season.
