The cooperative Tomates del Guadiana, a subsidiary of Acopaex, is about to launch into the seventh extension of its industrial capacity. The project has been confirmed by the company president, Domingo Fernández: “Demand is increasing. We are going to extend our installations in order to process 2 000 more tonnes of tomatoes per day, or approximately 100 000 tonnes more per season.

The production plant, which is located close to Santa Amalia, opened in June 2002 and has since then undergone several extensions, in 2003, 2005, 2010, 2013, and between 2014 and 2015, for a total investment reaching close on EUR 38 million in 2016. According to the information supplied by the company, current processing capacity of their installations is now at 400 000 tonnes of tomatoes per season approximately, with about 8 200 tonnes processed per day. With this latest investment, which has required EUR 7 million, the Santa Amalia plant has become the biggest tomato processing outfit in Europe in terms of daily capacity. "Capacity could be further increased, but we are going to proceed with caution and careful thought," added President Fernández.
