In the US Midwest, where the forecast for 2017 is 450,000 tonnes, processing will start in mid August, behind a normal schedule due to the late planting season and moderate temperatures. Scattered and severe rain events have hit some fields in the past two weeks, with some areas receiving in excess of 10 inches while only a few miles away, the total might have been only one inch. Some crops have been drowned out and the saturated ground can reduce yield and there is a increased risk of diseases when tomatoes are wet for too long and have leaf wetness at a constant level.
