Iran: Industrial project becomes fully operational in Urmia

According to the Iranian press, a major two-phase industrial project worth Euro 20 million has become operational in Urmia, (600 km north-east of Tehran, close to the largest lake in the Middle East, in West Azarbaijan Province), with the second phase coming on stream in late July.

According to Hassan Hatami, the supervisor of West Azarbaijan Industrial Towns, the project, which includes tomato paste (first phase) and fruit concentrate production (second phase) plants, has been implemented within three years with 100% financing made by German investors, IRNA reported.

The fruit concentrate plant was officially inaugurated on 23 July in a ceremony attended by Deputy Minister of Industries, Mining and Trade Mehdi Sadeqi Niyaraki.

Pakistan to set up tomato plants

To help provide maximum benefits to tomatoes farmers and to reduce imports and increase exports, the Government of KP (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) and Baluchistan provinces in Pakistan should help the private sector setup tomatoes processing units.

Tomatoes are a major crop for KP and Baluchistan provinces. Tomatoes are processed and converted into paste, puree or sauce. They can also be processed as chopped tomatoes or peeled tomatoes. Tomatoes are packed in tin cans or food grade plastics for long term storage and export. But tomatoes and tomato products are also heavily imported from Russia, China, Middle East and other developed nations.

Since long term cold storage for tomatoes and other crops is one of the main requirement for food industry, therefore the Government decided to create cold storages closer to new power plants.

The Government should also provide land, utility connections, export finance and running finances through single window facility to investors willing to setup tomato processing plant and exporting companies in KP.
