In a significant move to strengthen its global vegetable seed business, Mitsui & Co., Ltd. has announced the integration of Totam Seeds B.V. into a newly formed entity. This new company is being established through the strategic integration of Mitsui's existing wholly-owned subsidiaries, ISI Sementi S.p.A. and Top Seeds International Ltd. The restructuring process is currently underway, with the official launch of the integrated company scheduled for July 1, 2025.

The newly formed entity, which will be based in Fidenza, Italy, aims to offer a comprehensive and differentiated portfolio of tomato varieties, ranging from processing tomatoes to those specifically developed for active greenhouse cultivation. By combining the strengths of ISI Sementi and Top Seeds International with Totam's specialization in hybrid tomato seeds for active greenhouses, the new company seeks to deliver more complete and distinctive solutions to customers worldwide. Totam's R&D center in the Netherlands will be retained, with Mitsui intending to further accelerate innovation through enhanced breeding and research capabilities. Prominent, the tomato division within Cooperative Growers United and a joint venture partner of Totam, will remain a shareholder.

This consolidation builds upon Mitsui's strategic investments in the vegetable seed sector over recent years. In November 2020, Mitsui acquired a 75% stake in Totam Seeds B.V., an innovative seed company specializing in high-quality tomato seeds for active greenhouse production. At that time, Mitsui partnered with the Prominent Group, the largest tomato agriculture cooperative in the Netherlands, to expand Totam's operations. This relationship, which began in April 2019, focused on conducting trials with each other's seed varieties.

Further expanding its presence, Mitsui reached an agreement in November 2021 to acquire 100% of ISI Sementi S.p.A., a vegetable seeds producer founded in 1981 and headquartered in Fidenza, Italy. Mitsui recognized ISI's strong relationships with over 1,000 customers in key agricultural countries and its significant footprint in the Mediterranean market. Mitsui's long-term strategy for ISI included investing in research and development, innovation, and talent, as well as leveraging its global presence to support ISI's international growth. These acquisitions underscore Mitsui's strategic priority in the Nutrition and Agriculture business domain, aiming to provide solutions for increasing the supply of nutritious food and addressing challenges such as climate change and a growing global population.
