Italy: an early agreement to prepare for Brexit

Europe is preparing for the possibility of a no-deal Brexit: a first agreement has been signed in order to reinforce trade relations between Italy and the United Kingdom, which is a privileged destination for Italian food products, particularly for tomato products.
 
According to the Italian press, this agreement aims at instituting conditions that will increase the competitiveness of the Italian tomato processing industry, based on the acknowledged quality of its products and on the commitment of the industry to fair and decent working conditions in the agricultural sector. The United Kingdom and Italy share similar values in terms of their commitment to overcoming the various forms of "caporalato" and want to promote a law-abiding context for an industry that is vital for the export trade of Italian food products.

This historic agreement between the Coldiretti (National Italian Agricultural Confederation) and Princes, the UK-based food group and subsidiary of Mitsubishi, which owns the biggest tomato processing site in Europe (Foggia), is due to be signed in Rome on 12 February in the afternoon. This event is expected to bring together Jill Morris, the UK ambassador to Italy, Paolo De Castro, first vice-President of the European Parliament’s Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development, Ettore Prandini, President of the Coldiretti, and Giancarlo Laviola, General Director of Princes Industrie Alimentari.
