Burkina Faso: A new tomato processing facility

In Burkina Faso, President Ibrahim Traoré is spearheading the development of an $8 million tomato processing facility, with an aim to transform the country's agricultural sector. Despite producing 290,000 tons of tomatoes in 2021, the country faces challenges with a considerable amount of its harvest exported to Ghana and losses due to perishability.
 
Burkina Faso's economy is predominantly agricultural, with 80 to 90% of the population engaged in farming activities. This sector significantly contributes to the GDP through the production of cereals, cash crops, roots, tubers, fruits, and vegetables. However, the country faces significant challenges, such as substantial post-harvest losses, exemplified by the fact that 30% of tomatoes are wasted due to inadequate storage and processing facilities.

To address this issue, Burkina Faso currently imports tomato products, highlighting the necessity for local processing capabilities. President Traoré's vision for economic self-sufficiency includes the construction of a state-of-the-art tomato processing plant. Once operational, the facility will convert locally grown tomatoes into paste, puree, and sauces, thereby reducing waste and decreasing reliance on imported goods.

The plant promises not only economic benefits but also the creation of 100 direct jobs and over 5,000 indirect employment opportunities, positively impacting local communities. Funded by the Agency for the Promotion of Community Entrepreneurship, this initiative demonstrates Burkina Faso’s commitment to sustainable agricultural practices and economic development.
