WPTC members met online on 16 February to establish the preliminary world production forecast for the year 2021. The global estimate is currently 39.5 million tonnes, up 2.9% from 2020’s final production (38.4 million tonnes).

In the AMITOM countries, production is expected to increase by 3%, from 17.3 to 17.8 million tonnes, while in California production could rise by 7% to just under 11 million tonnes. An increase of nearly 20% is expected in WPTC members in the southern hemisphere to a total of 2.2 million tonnes. China, however, anticipates a 10% reduction to 5.2 million tonnes.

This early estimate will however have to be finetuned once the ongoing negotiations between growers and processors have been finished and surfaces planted.
