Agricultural producers and experts have met in Extremadura during the “XIV Jornadas Tecnicas” organized in mid-January by ACOPAEX to analyse new tomato varieties and cultivation techniques, as well as a treatment to increase the yield per hectare by 10.000 kilos and bring it to 100,000 kilos.

Thus, at the moment, the yield per hectare of tomatoes for processing in Extremadura amounts to 90,000 kilos, and according to the president of Acopaex, Domingo Fernández, it is necessary to increase that figure in order to be able to compete against Andalusia and other origins, such as Portugal and the United States, in foreign markets. To achieve this, the Region will continue betting on the cooperativism formula with which Acopaex has been working for 28 years.

The president of Acopaex stressed that the industrial tomato sector continues to have great potential in the area, although he acknowledged that it continues struggling to get out of a bad cycle, even though this year's results will be better than in the previous one. In his opinion, "it is not about producing more and selling less efficiently, but about producing the necessary volume and selling it correctly, so that producers are able to make a profit."
