The 2021 California Processing Tomato harvest has begun on the last week of June.

According to the first report published by Westcon Foods on July 6, the California’s 2021 processed tomato harvest officially started with two processors beginning organics in late June (week 26). The remaining processors were expected to start within the week 27 (ending July 10). PTAB estimates that 37,420 metric tonnes (mT) (41,249 total short tons, sT) had been harvested by the week ending July 3.
 

The USDA lowered their intentions in May to 10.522 million mT (11,600,000 short tons, sT), down from their January estimate of 10.976 million mT (12,100,000 sT) (4% decrease). This is still a 2.6% increase over the 2020 crop of 10,254,600 mT (11,304,827 sT). However, a 10.522 million mT (11.6 million tons) crop will still further deplete inventories going into the 2022 pack; June 1, 2022.
 
Fresno County is still estimated to be the top California county for contracted tomato acres by far, but it is getting smaller on a percent basis of the total crop. Fresno was 30.5% of the total acres harvested in 2020 and is now estimated to be just 26.8% of the total acres contracted in 2021. There is 7,600 less acres contracted in Fresno in 2021 compared to the previous year. The county with the largest increase was Merced, which gained 3,400 acres over the previous year.
